Summer has begun

With 2 weeks of adventures under our belt, we are looking forward to 5 more! Next week is "Cirque de Woodland" where we will explore the many aspects of circus art. It will be a fun experience for us all! Registration is still open and the kids are excited to begin another adventure!

Open House & Community Planting Day

Meet our summer camp staff, enjoy free, fun workshops, demos and delightful activities for kids and grown-ups with our professional mentors! Bring your seedlings and starters and plant them in the Community Garden! Help yourself to delicious treats, hike the new and improved Tan Bark Trail, check out the new playground and celebrate spring!

Memories of the Original Camp Woodland

2010 Weekly Themes

Here's what we've got planned for this summer:

Week #1 (July 5 - 9): Beginnings/Gardening

Planting organic seeds, creating a butterfly garden, exploring beneficial bugs, planning a medicinal herb garden, crafting birdfeeders, building a worm house, compost relay races, designing stepping stones, moss gardens & terrariums, plants and natural dyes, building fairy houses, building a half-barrel pond, nature drawing and painting, tea parties and music in the garden and more. This week ends with a community pot-luck picnic.

Week #2 (July 12 - 16): Hiking/Journeys
Trail adventures, artistic maps, wilderness skills, identifying birds, leaves and wildflowers, scavenger hunts, Catskill folktales and myths, letterboxing, building forts and huts, nature journaling, leaf printing, labyrinths, journey skits, picnics, discovering secret hideouts, folk music, Indigenous traditions and more. This week ends with a community pot-luck picnic.

Week #3 (July 19 - 23): Cirque de Woodland
Tumbling, juggling, face painting, dress up, mask work, clown routines, physical comedy, joke-telling, improv, movement, dance, hula hoops, rings, hats, ribbons and objects in motion, crafting a Calder-style mini-circus, magic and more. This week culminates to an original Circus performance.

Week #4 (July 26 - 30): Fine Arts & Theater Week
Work with professional artists: sketching, acting, painting, choreography, collage, stunts, printmaking, opera singing, pottery, staging, felting, improvisation, candle-making, percussion, nature crafts, song-writing and more. This week culminates to a Catskill Woodland Camp Benefit Concert, performance and art exhibit.

Week #5 (August 2-6): Classic Camp Week
Beach day, wacky hair day, weird hat day, pajama day, camp chants and songs, classic camp games, kickball, hopscotch, red light green light, red rover, capture the flag, friendship bracelets, tie dye, team-building activities, campfire stories, an un-birthday party, solar s’mores and more. This week will culminate to a Wacky Olympics, complete with an obstacle course and wacky vendors!

No camp the week of 8/9 - 13

Week #6 (August 16 - 20): Global Village
Travel to Thailand: make shadow puppets, eat sticky rice with mango, make a lotus flower raft and celebrate a Thai Water Festival! Travel the Australian Outback: Explore wildlife and wrestle alligators! Journey to Hungary: sample authentic foods, learn belly-dancing and percussion, create folk art! Adventure to Ireland: Experience step dancing, Celtic art, limerick writing and Irish music! Celebrate Haiti: explore Haitian daily life and culture and develop fundraising ideas to help earthquake survivors!
This week culminates to a Multi-cultural celebration and feast.

Week #7 (August 23 - 27): Positive Change/Community Building
Participate in community service and charity, Learn about health, nutrition, permaculture and native wisdom, create guerilla art, deliver garden flowers and cards to the elderly, harvest the garden, donate to the local food bank, clear litter off the forest trails, donate toys to the local thrift store, craft gifts and artwork for hospitalized children and more! This week will culminate to a community garden harvest celebration, complete with a bake-sale, pie contest, and lemonade stand to raise funds for the local animal shelter.
